Aiguille Verte (South Face)

The steep and rocky South face of Aiguille Verte, behind the precipitous summit of Aiguille du Plan (possibly also Dent du Crocodile) above Chamonix in France. In view here, from left to right, is Pic Sans Nom (the needle lower-left), Aiguille Sans Nom, the snow and ice-covered summit of Aiguille Verte, Grand Rocheuse, Aiguille du Jardin and Pointe Evelin. The somewhat u-shaped col between Aiguille Verte and Grand Rocheuse is part of the route of the first ascent of Aiguille Verte in 1865 when Englishman Edward Whymper, along with Swiss Christian Almer and Franz Biner, reached the summit by what is now known as the Whymper Couloir (the lower portion of which is out of sight behind Arête du Moine). Sadly, not long after their ascent, Whymper lost his life on the Matterhorn.
