Aiguille de la République

I’ll happily take easy opportunities for good light in photography. This photograph is a good example, illustrating the afternoon sun lighting up the granite pinnacle of Aiguille de la République. I fortuitously captured it on the way to a pizza restaurant in Chamonix, whilst my wife and I were walking alongside the river Arve. (I can't think of any other places I've been where I'd take a 70-200mm lens to dinner). The subject matter, which is 3,305m high, felt quite fitting as we’d spent the day trekking on the Grand Balcon Nord, starting our day with the train to Montenvers before ascending the paving slabs to Signal Forbes with the Mer de Glace on our left and the summit of Aiguille de la République high above our heads in front, alongside its neighbouring peak, Aiguille des Grand Charmoz.  (Grand Balcon Nord is highly rated by ALPSInsight, who term it one of the classic routes in the valley for runners and hikers. It’s a fine trek with great views).
