Aiguille de Blaitière and Aiguille du Plan

Clouds surrounding Aiguille de Blaitière, Dent du Caïman (Dent du Crocodile), Aiguille du Plan and Aiguille des Pélerins above Chamonix in France.

Remarkably, the obvious glacier in the centre of the photo, on the North Face of Aiguille du Plan, attracts ski mountaineers, with the first ski descent completed in 1977 by French climbers Laurent Giacomini and Jean-Marc Boivin. Boivin, who passed away in 1990 (whilst base jumping next to Angel Falls in Venezuela) was an elite member of the alpine climbing community during the 1970s and 1980s, pushing the boundaries of the sport through committing solo climbs, hard ski descents and by adopting the use of hang-gliders to chain climbs together on different peaks (Aiguille du Fou and Aiguille du Dru for instance in 1981, via the summit of Aiguille de Blaitière in this image).
